How to prevent damage from the Lithium-ion Batteries?

Lithium-ion batteries are known to be rechargeable batteries that are charged and discharged with the help of lithium ions moving in between negative and positive electrodes.

It can be used in many products such as toys, electronic devices, wireless devices, small and large electronic appliances, and so on. Due to this, the demand for lithium-ion batteries is rising, and according to the research report of Astute Analytica the Global Lithium-ion Battery Market registered a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.5% during the forecast period 2022-2027.

The possibility of damages lithium-ion batteries can cause: –

Can cause a fire: – The lithium-ion battery can generate heat even if there is no visible source or sign of the heat. Once the heat overflows there are high risks of battery explosion due to which water and fire extinguisher are unable to prevent the fire.

What can cause a fire in a lithium-ion battery?

Well, heat is the main factor for lithium-ion batteries to catch fire or explosion. Overheating unstable batteries or improper charging can also become the for fire. Apart from these, if the batteries are stored in a close setting the heat may start overflowing in the batteries which can lead to an explosion or fire in the lithium-ion batteries.

Fire is considered to be the main cause of lithium-ion batteries exploding. So, what are the precautions people should take to avoid such damage.

The list of some preventions is given below: –

Make sure to store batteries in a suitable temperature: – Lithium-ion batteries are tend to catch fire when the temperature is much higher than usual because the lithium batteries can absorb the invisible source of heat flowing around that causes batteries to overheat and leads to fire and explosion.

So always ensure that the lithium-ion batteries are not heating, also not kept in any heated area.

Avoid storing charged batteries for too long: – If the lithium-ion batteries are fully- charged and kept in store for too long the heat within the batteries will start flowing which later will cause them to absorb more heat from the surroundings as well which might later cause fire and explosion. So always try to avoid storing fully-charged lithium batteries for a long period.

Avoid lithium-ion batteries charging near crowded surroundings: – As is already mentioned lithium-ion batteries tend to explode due to overheating. To avoid such damage, make sure that the lithium-ion batteries are away from crowded surroundings because if they get overcharged or overheated, this can cause damage to other things. So always charge batteries away from the other stuff.

Place lithium-ion battery bins away from other things: – As people are already aware about the overheating factor for the batteries by now, always keep in mind that the bins for the used lithium-ion batteries should be away from other things and also keep in mind to use the metal bin for the batteries so that it will not cause a fire.
